What is a WordPress Plugin?

Posted by: Christina Hills | Comments (14)

When you first get your WordPress website installed, it will come with a standard set of features.  But when you add plugins, then your website becomes unique to you, and gives your site the ‘bells and whistles’ to make it really sing.

Plugins add Fun & Functionality

So what is a ‘Plugin’?

A WordPress plugin is extra software code that you can easily add to your website from within your admin area that give you extra functionality, such

as extra Search Engine Optimization, or a fancy way to print out your web pages.  Many plugins are free, in fact most of the one’s I use are free.  But sometimes you may want to pay for a premium plugin that is more advanced and complex than some simple free ones.

My favorite premium plugin is a fantastic one called WishList Member.  Wishlist member is a plugin that will turn your website into a membership site.  It’s the system I’m using for my Spring Website Creation Workshop Program.

With Halloween happening tomorrow, I thought I’d send along this fun video from Charles Schultz: “It’s the Great Pumpking Charlie Brown” and talk a little bit about using video on your WordPress Website.

Notice at the end of this video, is an add to buy the DVD.

You can do this as well in your videos, you can add text to promote your products and or services. Then upload them to your YouTube.com account and share them with the world!

If you’d like to learn how to add a video of your own, to your YouTube.com account, just click here for a quick 5 min video from me

Enjoy!

It’s a nice brisk fall Sunday afternoon.  I’m home with my family working on my handouts for my students in the Website Creation Workshop, while my daughter watches a Disney movie. And I thought I’d add a ‘Falling Leaves’ animation on my website today.

It’s a fun plugin called ‘Snow and More’ by Nicolas Kuttler that let’s you add leaves, snowflakes, baloons, and more.
(you can also limit it to only occur on a specific page/post)

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like:

fallingleaves-700

You can  control the speed and duration of the images falling.  You can also control how long you want the images to fall for.  I have mine set for 10 seconds.

This is one of the things I like about WordPress.  You can add fun plugins to your site, to entertain your visitors.

This ‘Snow and More’ plugin is  free, and you can  find here at WordPress.org

(if you want to see it animate again, just refresh the page :) )

Here are the answers to your questions that were submitted during the webinar last week.  On that webinar I explained what WordPress is, showed different examples and explained how you can use it in your business.

Q: Are the WordPress Pages easy to edit?
A: WordPress pages (and blog posts) are very easy to edit. WordPress was designed so that non-technical people could write and create web pages and blog posts quickly and easily. No HTML knowledge is required.

Q: Where do you find the different types of WordPress sites?
A: You can build virtually any type of website with WordPress.  It all depends upon your goal.  There are many case studies here on this site for you to look at for inspiration.

Q: Before one chooses to build a site, are there some questions to ask to determine what type of site we should build for ourselves?
A: The most important question is “What is the purpose of my website?”  What do you want people to do once they get to your site.  This is one of the things I coach you on during the 8 module course.

One of the big things that’s great about WordPress is it’s ability to become a membership site.  I’ve used WordPress in various ways as a membership site.  In fact, each time I run the Website Creation Workshop I create a new membership site for that class!  WordPress makes it easy to do.

Well I got some cool videos for you to watch on using WordPress as a membership site with the plugin WishListMember

So you may be wondering what Wordpress has to do with Podcasting. First let me clarify what Podcasting is:

Podcasting is the automatic delivery of your audios, videos, PDFs, to your audience’s handheld device.

So instead of having your audios and videos JUST on your website, with Podcasting those audios and videos show up on a person’s iPod, iPhone, Zune or any other digital media player. Now if you have a website or blog with Wordpress, then this delivery process is much easier because of RSS

I created a post on my Shopping Cart Podcast Blog that has an animated video explaining just what podcasting is in plain english. Click the image above to view it….

RSS in Plain English (Video)

Posted by: Christina Hills | Comments (7)

One key to understanding WordPress and the power of the feed is to understand RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Now at first glance that term seems kinda techy and geeky, but once you understand it, you see the power of how WordPress gets your website syndicated out over the whole internet. That’s more exposure for you and your business without you having to do anything. WordPress does it all for you.

I found this great little video that explains RSS in 3 min 44 seconds. It uses the term ‘blogs’ but your WordPress Website can be a blog or not a blog.
