With WordPress, you have a lot of flexibility on how your site looks.  And as you work with WordPress, you learn different ways to customize your website so that it presents to your audience in the best way.  Well today’s blog post is about using the ‘Read More’ link for your long blog posts.  This makes your homepage of your blog more readable, because you can break up long blog posts into 2 parts.

Video explain it the best, so just watch this video as I demonstrate what the ‘More Tag’ is and how you would use it on your homepage/category pages to shorten long blog posts

What is a WordPress Plugin?

Posted by: Christina Hills | Comments (20)

When you first get your WordPress website installed, it will come with a standard set of features.  But when you add plugins, then your website becomes unique to you, and gives your site the ‘bells and whistles’ to make it really sing.

Plugins add Fun & Functionality

So what is a ‘Plugin’?

A WordPress plugin is extra software code that you can easily add to your website from within your admin area that give you extra functionality, such

as extra Search Engine Optimization, or a fancy way to print out your web pages.  Many plugins are free, in fact most of the one’s I use are free.  But sometimes you may want to pay for a premium plugin that is more advanced and complex than some simple free ones.

My favorite premium plugin is a fantastic one called WishList Member.  Wishlist member is a plugin that will turn your website into a membership site.  It’s the system I’m using for my Spring Website Creation Workshop Program.

It’s a nice brisk fall Sunday afternoon.  I’m home with my family working on my handouts for my students in the Website Creation Workshop, while my daughter watches a Disney movie. And I thought I’d add a ‘Falling Leaves’ animation on my website today.

It’s a fun plugin called ‘Snow and More’ by Nicolas Kuttler that let’s you add leaves, snowflakes, baloons, and more.
(you can also limit it to only occur on a specific page/post)

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like: Read More→

Here are the answers to your questions that were submitted during the webinar last week.  On that webinar I explained what WordPress is, showed different examples and explained how you can use it in your business.

Q: Are the WordPress Pages easy to edit?
A: WordPress pages (and blog posts) are very easy to edit. WordPress was designed so that non-technical people could write and create web pages and blog posts quickly and easily. No HTML knowledge is required.

Q: Where do you find the different types of WordPress sites?
A: You can build virtually any type of website with WordPress.  It all depends upon your goal.  There are many case studies here on this site for you to look at for inspiration.

Q: Before one chooses to build a site, are there some questions to ask to determine what type of site we should build for ourselves?
A: The most important question is “What is the purpose of my website?”  What do you want people to do once they get to your site.  This is one of the things I coach you on during the 8 module course.

One of the big things that’s great about WordPress is it’s ability to become a membership site.  I’ve used WordPress in various ways as a membership site.  In fact, each time I run the Website Creation Workshop I create a new membership site for that class!  WordPress makes it easy to do.

Well I got some cool videos for you to watch on using WordPress as a membership site with the plugin WishListMember
