Twitter vs. Facebook

By Christina Hills

Are you a Twitter person or a FaceBook Person (or neither) ? I’m taking a poll of my readers to see which camp you fall into.  Twitter and Facebook are the two largest social media platforms.  Some people LOVE Twitter, and some HATE it.  Same goes with Facebook. Using Social Media is a great way to connect with your audience and friends.  And it’s a great way to drive traffic to your WordPress Website.

So the Question is Which do personally YOU Prefer?

Which is more FUN for you!

(not which works best for your business)

So what are you?

Are you a Twitter person?

Are you a Facebook person?

(or neither!)

  1. Carol Giambri says:

Actually find both useful and no preference; however, Facebook allows me more characters to speak; twitter seem to run to if I want to chat super fast and receive replies.

  2. Joe says:

I think they are both good for bringing traffic. My question is why do some use their business name and logo instead of thier actual name and photo. Is it best to have two accounts on each site? One for business and one for personal?

    • Christina Hills says:

      Joe,

I use both as well, but think that everyone has a preference. Either slight or large. So I wanted to see which camp people fell into.

With twitter I think you can have as many accounts as you want. So some do a biz and a personal account.

With Facebook you can only have ONE account. But you can have fan pages.
My fan page is at http://www.ChristinaHillsonFacebook.com

  3. Very good question, Christina. Twitter is easier to use in terms of dashing off things quickly, especially when you don’t have much time but want to have a social media presence. On the other hand, Facebook offers you a chance to add some pizazz to the experience by letting you attach a link to a cool blog post, complete with a photo, etc. In addition, there’s much more interaction with Facebook, which is nice.

  4. Ellen Zucker says:

FB and Twitter are effective for different purposes. I use both and find they complement each other.

  6. I really have not been involved with Facebook so I can’t be a judge but do use Twitter on more of a professional level (healthcare / telemedicine. . .). I also use LinkedIn a lot, for professional reasons as well.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Poly,
I, too, have a LinkedIn presence, but don’t ‘hang out’ on LinkedIn.

I spend more of my time on Twitter because it’s fast!

  7. Bruce says:

I like Facebook for connecting with friend ands colleagues, and if I ask folks to repost something like a link to my new ebook, many do, and traffic flows.

After a year on Twitter, Tweeting daily, following the netiquette suggested (relationship building) I’ve got almost zero traffic. I think Twitter is a bust, unless you have a web-related or marketing product/service to Tweet.

    Cheers!
    Bruce

    • Christina Hills says:

      Bruce,

I think the majority of the population is on Facebook so I think that it might be better for certain markets to promote there. There seems to be a lot of web folks and marketing folks on Twitter, but really I feel it’s just a matter of time before regular folks get there.

The celebrities and the news media are helping to build Twitter’s presence.

( Oh and thanks for the RT on Twitter)
      :)

  8. Al Hanzal says:

Obvious we all have limited time. Both Twitter and Facebook have their place (no choice was given for liking both). I tell my customers, go where your customers are at. Depending upon your customers, one or the other site can work better.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Al,

I did not give a choice for liking both on purpose, because I wanted people to pick a side.

The question was which do you ‘prefer’, not which was more affective for your business. I ask this because it dawned on me that although I like Twitter better, I think that my market hangs out on Facebook more. So I should hang out there more too!

  9. Gladys says:

I use them both, but differently, and find them both useful. My personal Facebook page is just that – personal. It’s a way for me to connect with people I know but don’t see often and isn’t related to my business (for the most part). I have a Facebook Fan page for my business, and use it to post links to my blog and other articles I find interesting. Not much interaction with people there.

Twitter is where I interact with people who I know through my business. Some of them are becoming friends, but it is still primarily business.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Gladys,

That’s the thing about Facebook I don’t like. I don’t like that term ‘fanpage’. I have a fanpage too (you can see it linked at the top of this blog post)

I love the richness of Facebook in that you can find out a LOT about people there.

  10. Dave says:

I use both for different reasons. I also use flickr and other media to get my message out.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Dave,

I have started to use Flickr for photo sharing. Had an account for a long time, but didn’t use it much. Then it dawned on me that it would be a great way to share photos with my VAs who are building websites and documents for me!

  11. What if you are both? I usually use SocialOomph to set up my tweets, which are then posted on Facebook. That doesn’t seem to work with any of the three choices. Hmmmm…..

    ;-) Carma

  12. Angelika says:

hhmmmm …. and then there is also Tumblr

I like both FB and t

  13. Lois Keel says:

I wish I could have said both Facebook _&_ that they’re a time waster. Yes, things can be promoted on Fb, but if you truly try to stay in touch with all the postings of your Fb friends you can spend a lot of time. To not do it & just post 1 way messages becomes obvious & I know some who do exactly that.

At the start of Oct. I set up a ning social network specifically for people interested in storytelling in Michigan. The state & the field are both suffering a severe decline. This can be a specialized spot to brainstorm answers. It’s proving somewhat successful, but an uphill climb. Someone told me she couldn’t join as, like me, she’s on a very active list for storytelling & on Fb & wants time to do more than just that. I can understand even though I know the ning group is far less hectic both because of the way it’s structured & its very specific focus.

  14. Carol Giambri says:

Does Amazon’s SW3 allow you to post photos?. I heard using their services is cheap and one lady got a bill of a whole 7 cents.

I haven’t posted photos places other than on hard drive for storage.

    Carol

  15. Carol Giambri says:

I do find Ning kind of slow for getting responses most times at least on the groups I am in and unless it is a class I am paying for and needing or giving feedback I tend to run with Twitter probably first.

I’m waiting to find out through posting there the email address for one of the big wigs at Apple’s retail store. I can see a way to “let’s make a deal” concept for my change and population over 50 with Apple’s relationship. I’m a three time missing person solver after decades too…amazing what my daughter and I can find!

    carol

  16. Heather says:

I use facebook a lot as I have lots of people on there and I play some of the games but I also use twitter but not as much.

  17. Joe says:

I have not had much experience on either. But as a beginner, I think Twitter would be better for Business and Facebook better for personal use. One reason that stands out to me is that on Twitter you can follow any user you choose to. On Facebook, you need permission from a user before they will be your friend.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Joe,

There are so many different ways you can use Twitter. My husband and I use it to direct message each other privately. It’s a very convenient way for us to communicate.

I also use it for business and fun! But that’s because I like to text message.

I like the richness and fullness of Facebook. AND I like the privacy involved with it.

  18. Christina Hills says:

To everyone who as taken the poll:

The results are what I expected, people like using Facebook better than Twitter.

    Thanks for voting!

  19. Andrew says:

Why not join the two or all your social networks together? I think Twitter can more impersonal, yet a great way to find new people to interact with and find out new information.

I like the speed and concise nature of Twitter. Facebook, I find is for people that like to write more.

I’ve joined my Twitter account and Facebook together, yet I post only certain things on Facebook. I like Twittering from my mobile phone too.

    Happy Travels

    A

    • Christina Hills says:

      Andrew,
Yes I do have my social networks linked together, and I think that is something everyone should do. It saves time and keeps all of them updated.

I teach how to connect Facebook and Twitter to your WordPress Websites.

I was taking the poll, because I was curious WHICH social network you preferred to hang out on.

I was spending more time on Twitter, but lately I’ve been ejoying Facebook more.

I like Facebook because it’s like 3D email, yet without the pressure to respond of email.

      :)
