The Best Superbowl Commercial

By

Each year when the Superbowl airs, we like to watch for the best Superbowl ads.  I found that this year had a lot of negative ads, which made me feel flat and empty.  But my favorite one was the Volkswagon commercial “The Force”.

It’s a great commercial because it uses memorable storytelling to convey it’s message.

What was your favorite Superbowl Commercial? Comment below…

  1. Wasn’t the kid such a great actor? I love how his face is masked, but you can tell what he is feeling by the way he slumps, or lunges, or puts his hand to his face. I especially like the end where the “force” works and he looks back at his parents as if to say, “Did you see that? Did you see what I did?” This was my favorite as well and I’ve been sharing this video even before the Super Bowl.

  2. I may be the only person on the planet who didn’t watch the Super Bowl or the ads, but your email inviting me to watch your favorite ad, compelled me to click. This was wonderful and I laughed out loud at the end. As Tiffany says, you get the entire story just by the kid’s body language. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Melissa says:

I loved this one too. :-)

I hated the Pepsi Max ads. And the workout shoes ad with the girl and her trainer was beyond suggestive. I don’t remember the brand because I don’t care to.

      Melissa,

I didn’t like the Pepsi Ads at all. Most of them were negative, or just plain weird. Didn’t make me want to try the product

    • Cheri says:

I agree about the shoe ad. We watch the super bowl as a family and I have two young boys – that ad is not what I want them to see. I can’t believe that was considered appropriate to air.

  4. Jeff says:

I like it, use the Force! Sometimes with a little help from friends.

  5. Teena says:

YES! I loved this one! Totally agree with Tiffany on the acting too.

  6. Thank you Christina for sharing this fun video. I was out in the sunshine yesterday and didn’t see the game. Ahhhhh… May the force be with you!

  7. It was sweet, uplifting commercial. I agree with you regarding most of the rest of the commercials this year…very disappointing.

  8. Carol Farbe says:

I watched the first half and that was the one commercial that stood out in my mind. I laughed out loud when seeing it. When you pointed it out that it was #1, I wasn’t surprised. I smile when I think about it.

  9. Lianda says:

It was probably a “small person” – the hands look too mature. But I agree with TIffany- body language is more important than any words we speak. That’s why people know when you are lying- your body gives you away! I write about that on my website.

  10. I agree this was the best by far! The concept was brilliant. We laughed out loud and rewound the DVR to watch it twice afterward! The Carmax “analogy” commercial was also very cute. I agree with the general consensus that the Pepsi ads were abominable. But, the fact that we recall that Pepsi even ran ads might fall into that “Any publicity is good publicity category.”

  11. Maary Alice says:

My favorite was the beaver and the Bridgestone tires ad, showing that doing a good deed for someone bring YOU great benefits.

  12. joe says:

what a time suck… mindless commercials… for those who are so easily entertained by mindless pursuits.

  13. C.J. Hallock says:

I loved “The Force” commercial and the Ford commercial about the social interactive race was a genius move on Ford’s behalf! They are going to pull in so much traffic off of that!

The Doritos commercials were pretty funny as well but the one commercial I’m shocked didn’t air or at least I didn’t see it was the Chevy “BumbleBee” Commercial … I seen that online a couple of days ago and loved it!

  14. Patty says:

Christina, You are right, I enjoyed this one. (And I am a proud and Happy Volkswagon gal).

But I also enjoyed seeing Fonzie and Seinfeld and Marsha Brady…it must not have been that good if I can’t remember what the spot was for.

Too bad we didn’t see Oprah and Letterman again…that was good.

    Thanks for asking.

  15. Lauren says:

We don’t get any of the super bowl ads here in Canada! We have to rely on the internet to see them! This is the only ad I have seen – so it’s my #1 as well!

  16. Stojka says:

Discovered that Darth Vader in the commercial is actually played by 2 different little boys, both were on The Talk tv show today with their moms, one by satelite and one in person. TOO CUTE!!

  17. Stella says:

My favorite is “Imported from Detroit.” It’s where I live, actually within the city limits. We’ve been through a lot.

  18. Jim Campbell says:

Personally I Love the fact that people who dislike football will watch the Super Bowl for the ads. That’s genius in my eyes…

    “In-The-Flow”

    • Christina Hills says:

      Jim,
I’m one of those folks. I don’t dislike football, I’m just not interested in it.

I find marketing and clever commercials much more fun!

      :)

  19. Susan says:

I saw the whole game…was great… loved gb ever since my neighbor was their famous qb…but I didnt see some of the commercials…this was one of them…i didnt like the pepsi ad but then again I dont like pepsi…:)
I HATED the ads the lady on Biggest Loser did…especially the supposedly naked one…sheer disappointment!!!

  20. Joe says:

I like the music, but 20K for a VW is way too much. Some people are getting rich off of that. I guess it’s good for us internet marketers that some people still fall for the hype, but I am really getting sick and tired of it. It insults my intelligence actually makes me less likely to buy.

    • Christina Hills says:

      Joe,
I’m not a car nut, so I can’t comment on the prices of cars.
but whenever you look at a price a business owner is offering, you should think about all of their costs. Some things may look on the surface like the owner is making a killing, but behind the scenes there may be MANY expenses going on there that we don’t know about

  21. natalie says:

Wow. thanks for your feedback! I watched the game from Ontario, and not being a cable or satellite family, we watched from a Canadian channel and ‘missed’ out on all the good American commercials…I guess we did not miss much! AND I got to see this totally AWEsome ad…May we ALL know that the force IS with us:-)) thanks, ya’ll!

  22. I love it! Thank you, Christina, for sharing the hope of a child.

  23. Mark Vann says:

I loved the VW commercial! I also really like the fact that it was created around simple human nature. As kids we all did things like that, and the they coupled it with a famous movie everyone is familiar with, nothing new here, but ingeniously done!

  24. Paulette Grant says:

I never watch the superbowl or its ads, but I have been hearing all kinds of praise for this ad. Seeing it for the first time, I was totally engrossed and laughted out loud at the end.
    This was great! Thanks
