Every Webmaster’s Dirty Little Secret

By Christina Hills

Every webmaster has a secret.

A dirty little secret that they don’t want to tell you.

A secret that they don’t want you knowing.

In fact they don’t want you or any of their clients knowing this secret.
I don’t know if you have a webmaster working for you now, or if you have thought about hiring one. But before you do, you need to know what they won’t tell you.

The smart webmasters do this thing I am going to tell you about (and of course if you *were* going to hire a webmaster, you would want a smart one now wouldn’t you?).

The way webmasters generally work is on an hourly basis.

They estimate how much work it will take to build a website for you, and then they charge you for the hours they work.

And when they are done, you have a website.

But that isn’t really the end…

The smart webmasters get you to sign up for a monthly maintenance agreement.

They get you (and dozens of their other clients) to pay them a flat fee every month for “maintenance”.

This kind of winds up being like that gym membership you sign up for in January and aren’t using (but you are still being billed for) in March.

They get you on this maintenance agreement so that when you want to make “small changes” and “updates”, you won’t have to pay anything.

But what they don’t tell you is how long you’ll have to wait to make an “update” or a “small change”.

The webmasters who get their clients to sign these agreements really like the money they make for them. But they don’t like making your small changes and updates.

You see your small changes and updates are boring work to the creative artistic webmaster.

They’d rather be working on a NEW client’s website, which is much more creative and artistic work for them. They’d also rather work on the NEW client’s website project because it pays them more in the short term.

The bottom line is that with a webmaster maintenance agreement, you still have to wait, sometimes for days or weeks, to get your small changes and updates done to your website.

This is not exactly a formula for being a nimble, fast-idea- executing online entrepreneur in my book.

If you want to turn ideas into websites fast, you need to be able to do it yourself.

And the good news is that it is now easier than ever to create your own websites yourself with the WordPress.org software and my Website Creation Workshop.
